Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
