French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Now French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
